Why you might consider switching (or adding) Printing Services

There are many reasons one may want to consider switching printing companies, but most of them will not be applicable here.

A common situation is facing all publishers, whether paper or electronic, and that is increasing energy costs, and for many also the falling value of the dollar.

For example, if one has a large publishing house, perhaps producing dozens of magazines which are distributed to different regions of the country, a special New York Magazine and another for California, one may still be printing them all in a single place (perhaps the Midwest) and shipping to the regions involved.

These shipping costs are going to eat even further into the bottom line.  And they are not going to get any better.  Even if fuel prices drop, rest assured it will only be temporary.

Since the cost for getting ready for a print job is actually going down even in these difficult times while shipping costs are skyrocketing, such a large publishing house might want to consider 'splitting' their print job offerings by region.  Print their California centered publications in California and their New York centered publications in New York, thus cutting the rising shipping costs.  And as shipping prices rise even more, will already be in a good position to minimize the impact.

For those who print "offshore" the same holds true for rising shipping costs.

However, these offshore printers are facing a double economic whammy in that the weakening dollar will simply not purchase as much in other countries as it once did.  Many U.S. publishers who now print offshore may well be in for a rude awakening when the time comes to renew contracts.

Even if a publishing company is not in the market for a new printing service at the moment, considering just how fast the economic scene is changing, wouldn't it be a good idea to be prepared?

Get quotes from other printing companies now.  That way one will have some idea of  what is available.

Another reason to begin compiling information ahead of time is that when the dollar falls even a bit more, there will be a rush of publishers who are currently printing offshore, back to domestic production.

By seeking price quotes now, and even locking in non-variable costs now, a publisher can be pre-positioned to save money, even as the surge of publishers returning home might drive the printing industry into being a "sellers market" rather than the "buyers market" it still is.

Even as a web (electronic) publisher, I'm also looking at possible future options as things change.
