These ancient people travelled through Iowa near the end of the Ice Age, from 9500 BCE to 7500 BCE, hunting animals such as the bison, mammoth, and mastodon. By 7500 to 5500 BCE—the Early Archaic period—there is evidence of a small number of people living in Iowa on a seasonal basis. These people were the first to have a sustained presence in Iowa and leave behind artifacts that prove their existence."
